Reformation in Education System- Late but Wise Decision
Sweeping
changes were announced by the Centre in the New Education Policy, thereby revamping
the age-old Indian education system. The National Education Policy now aims at
building a globally viable education system rooted in Indian ethos. The major
shift that was observed is the transformation from being solely academic to
academic plus vocational. A paradigm shift from the decades-old education
system to the present enables a student to become an engaged, productive, and
contributing citizen, which thereby accounts for building an equitable,
inclusive, and plural society.
The
main change was voiced out amongst the many other changes in the structural reform
of the school system from the existing 10+2 model. The curricular and
pedagogical structure for school education will now be guided by a 5 + 3 + 3 +
4 design. How this system works and how
it helps the students is the point of discussion.
#1 The Foundational Stage
Students
between the age group of 3-8 years will be part of the foundational stage. This
stage will be split into two: 3 years of preschool and two years in Grades 1-2.
This stage consists of play/activity-based learning. It will also focus on good
behavior, personal and public hygiene/cleanliness, teamwork, and cooperative
learning exercises.
#2 The Preparatory Stage
Students
in the formative age group constitute 8-11 years old and studying in grades 3 to 5,
forming the preparatory group. The preparatory stage will be the transition from
play-based learning to more formal but interactive classroom learning. New
concepts and follow-up of the old subjects will be introduced at this stage.
Emphasis will be on subjects like reading, writing, speaking, physical education,
art, languages, Science, and Mathematics.
#3 The Middle Stage
In
order to widen the scope of learning of grade 6 to 8 students, aged between
11-14, more abstract concepts in subjects like the sciences, mathematics, arts,
social sciences, and humanities are proposed to be introduced.
#4 The Secondary Stage
This top-graded stage is for 14-18 years. This stage consists of two sub-stages:
covering grades 9 and 10 in the first phase and grades 11 and 12 in the second.
This stage will comprise four years of multidisciplinary study, with greater
depth and greater critical thinking. Also helps in greater attention to life
aspirations by allowing greater flexibility to student choice. The High School stage may also allow exposure to more subjects and enable greater flexibility.
This
reforming policy aims at the multi-faceted development of a child and would provide
the student with a wider choice of profession and make education less tedious.
The policy has been designed to optimize learning for students based on the
cognitive development of children.
